    1. Preheat your oven up to 425oF. Place the rack at the center of it.
    2. Pour shortening in a 9-10 inch skillet and place it in the oven.
    3. In a large mixing bowl, add cornmeal, flour, baking powder, soda, and salt. Mix them well. In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, egg, and shortening.
    4. Now, combine both the mixtures and blend them until mixed completely. 
    5. Take your pan out of the oven and pour this batter in it carefully.
    6. Keep this pan back in the oven. Lower the temperature to 375oF. Bake it for about 20-25 minutes until it becomes golden brown in color.
    7. After that, take it out from the oven. Let it cool a bit and then, serve.
